Today, Jamaal shared with us another piece of self expression, but unlike what we thought. It wasn't a poem. It was a drawing that he drew while in the community room during free time. He asked for a black pen and notebook paper and secluded himself in one of the darkest corners.
The end result of Jamaal's mood was the picture of a hatched bird egg. And inside the bird egg, there was a rose frowing beautifully in the middle. Instead of the rose having regular petals, one petal was of a regular heart and the other was of heart split in two. I gave him compliments on the artwork and asked him about the symbolism. He just smirked and recited this poem that i'm not sure if I understand the connection or not.
Jamaal is going home in less than two weeks. He has had more flares of his temper, often punching walls and defacing property. I feel that he feels safe here, afraid to go out of his comfort zone. Clearly, seeking attention. He has expressed that he doesn't think he's ready to leave, that he doesn't want to slip back into the same habits that got him here. I, along with the other psychologists and counselors have been giving his positive encouragement, hoping it will change his way of thinking. In the esyes of the bigger picture, this is a setback, but one that with, support can be fixed.
What kind of person would want to stay hidden in here?
